So, I just randomly opened my Mockingjay book and turned to the part where Katniss rescues Octavia and the rest of her prep team from their jail cell. Where they see the clothing for the first time that isn’t the ones on their bodies.
Then Octavia drops to her knees, rubs the hem of a skirts against her cheek, and bursts into tears. “It’s been so long,” she gasps, “since I’ve seen something pretty.”
Some may say that’s a superficial passage, but it’s not really. That’s the way they were raised. The Capitol citizens aren’t terrible people, they’re just ignorant to the world outside of theirs.
It’s like a person who is racist. They’re racist because they were raised that way, to see color, to see black and white. But once they realized there’s more to people than just the color of their skin, their thinking changes. The same with the people of the Capitol. They seem despicable to us because we know better. But the phrase ignorance is bliss couldn’t be truer to their lifestyle.
